  • Painkiller

This tell-all short series treads the lines of fiction and reality. It details the harrowing story of how the pharma firm, Purdue Pharma, created an Opioid epidemic. It is a classic story of profits over ethics.

  • DopeSick

Dopesick follows the same opioid crisis in America, but it merits a spot on the list for its Emmy. DopeSick follows Michael Keaton (who won an Emmy for his performance in DopeSick), a doctor who reluctantly prescribes Oxycontin. He later discovers the pitfalls of the ‘wonder drug’ from first hand experience.

  • Dallas Buyers Club

This star studded picture takes a look at the lives of AIDs victims of the 80s. It takes place during the silent health war, as the USA’s health officials ignored the pandemic. Matthew McConaughey (playing Ron Woodroof) takes matters into his own hands to treat himself. He teams up with Jared Leto (drag queen and fellow AIDs victim, Rayon) to create a bigger impact in their community.

  • Black Mirror: Arkangel (Series 4, Episode 2)

Black Mirror is a series that touches on a variety of dystopian scenarios. Each episode features an entirely different plot and focus subject. This episode of Black Mirror follows a mother who opts her daughter, Sara, into a child monitoring implant system. The implant allows the mother to censor Sara’s hearing and vision, leading to unexpected consequences.

  • Unstable

The Netflix comedy series has charmed many. With real-life father-son duo Rob Lowe and John Owen Lowe starring in this series, Unstable has the makings of a classic sitcom series. The twist? A very eccentric biotech CEO (Rob Lowe) brings his son (John Owen Lowe) into his business to save his company from ruin.

  • John Q

This fictitious film is a classic American insurance struggle story, with a twist. When John Q. (played by Denzel Washington) discovers his son needs a heart transplant, he discovers his insurance won’t cut it. He takes extreme measures to fight for his son’s life. Although this movie isn’t based on a real-life story, it touches on very real issues.

  • Wit

Wit is based on an award winning play. It centres around Vivian Bearing, a sharp English Professor who is regrettably diagnosed with cancer. Vivian agrees to an aggressive chemo treatment. Unfortunately, things take a turn for the worse as she starts to feel less as a human and more as a test subject. This is an amazing cautionary tale for life science students.

Conclusion

As the credits roll on these Pharma films and series, there’s one vital factor to keep in mind. Remember, they’re inspired by real-world issues, but they’re still fictional. These stories are like mirrors. They show deeper truths about society, the pharmaceutical industry, and ethical dilemmas. Fact and imagination can blend together. If you’re interested in medicine or just curious, watch these movies with an open mind. They’re entertaining and give you a look into the world of medicine.
