AI replace job

Biotechnology

Will AI replace your job? AI enthusiasm and fear mongering are rampant, but what will the benefits or consequences be? What does AI mean for the future of the workforce?

According to this paper‘s exposure rubric, several industries have high exposure to large language models (LLM). These industries are likely to include data, information processing, and hospitals. That doesn’t mean all jobs relating to these areas will become defunct.

Evolution

AI is to our century what industrialisation was to previous centuries.  We are about to witness unprecedented growth and scaling innovation.

Let’s look at the UK for example. Britain was the birthplace of industrialisation in the 18th century. The primary sector reigned. Today, it’s a different story.

If we examine Britain’s economic structure, we see that most jobs used to be agricultural. The majority of a nation’s wealth was in its primary sector. Agriculture, mining, logging, and fishing were standard jobs. Now, what once was the majority is 1.03% of the UK’s workforce. Alternatively, the tertiary sector occupies 81% of the workforce.

To wrap up this comparison, we are about to see change at that scale. The farmer’s equivalent of 2023 will move out of ‘farming’ and into jobs of the future.

AI is ushering in a strong Quaternary sector with major ripple effects on other sectors. This scares many people because they may not have the skills to remain competitive in a transformed world. Fear is a good tool to use as a compass. Upskilling will be increasingly important to compete in an altered economy.

Enhanced Intelligence

The life science field will see a growth in enhanced intelligence. Enhanced intelligence is the combination of a human’s natural intelligence with artificial intelligence.

When one talks about upskilling with AI, enhanced intelligence is the goal. Educate yourself about AI tools relevant to your job. Proactively seek solutions to incorporate AI in your role. Enhanced intelligence individuals will have a competitive advantage over their peers.

Find ways to learn about AI so it won’t replace your job.

Will AI replace my job?

So what will happen to your jobs in the life science field?

Likely, nothing and also everything. AI is a tool, and it is unlikely that the AI that exists today will compete for your job. It is important to note that Artificial General Intelligence does not exist yet. The distinction between AGI and today’s AI is vital. AGI would allow AI to think beyond its algorithm. That is an adaptive, creative, intuitive AI model. If you’ve ever attempted a conversation with ChatGPT, you’ll know how limited it is. AGI transcends ChatGPT.

Many data based roles within the life science industry will become redundant, or responsibilities within the role will shift. This could mean that your schedule is freed up. It could lead to greater productivity as AI conducts menial tasks, allowing for more time on deeper tasks. Less admin, more thinking.

AI may not replace your job, but it will transform it.

Conclusion

The rise of AI is a hot topic of debate. Some people fear mass job losses, while others await new opportunities. AI is already having a significant impact on the life science industry. It is likely to continue to do so in the years to come.

As the article points out, AI is not a threat to all jobs in the life science field. However, it is likely to lead to changes in how we work. For example, AI can automate data-intensive tasks that are currently performed by humans. This could free up professionals to focus on more strategic and creative work.

In addition, AI can develop new drugs and treatments more quickly and efficiently. This could lead to new jobs in the life science field, as well as improvements in public health.

Overall, the impact of AI on the life science field is likely to be mixed. Some people will lose their jobs, but new jobs will also enter the market. Upskilling will be a vital step in preparing for the changes that AI will bring.
